Back to Whilton Mill for the second time this season. It had dried out a little since the last time we visited and the prospect of a dry day would certainly offer a different challenge.

A huge turnout for this event. We even had to turn away some entrants as there were just a few too many people wanting to come and get involved. With 38 drivers, we had to change our normal format slightly - but this just added to the spectacle!

It was great to see so many new faces alongside the regulars.

Track action started early to cram everything in. Practice first for everyone. The track started slippy but had rubbered in by the end of the third practice and times started to tumble. Indeed the fastest lap of the whole day was achieve in the 3rd practice session when Tom showed his intensions for the day and clocked a 56.92 - beating Alan W's previous club best of 56.97.

After having been on Ian W's racing lines and tarmac compositions track walk spectacular in the morning, it was good to see the new karters getting up to speed. Sometimes this did involve leaving the track - but that's pretty much par for the course.

With so much action on track at all times and with helping Allan out in the hut, I missed more of the action than I would normally.

Race 1 was tight early doors with Chris starting in 4th and fairly quickly making it to the lead. Gary M and Dave G having a battle early on and Rob R out front initially but falling back with a kart that wouldn't stick at the rear. Andy also had a spin when trying to avoid Chris whilst he was having a "moment". This left him back down the field and having to fight back - finally making it to 4th at the flag.

Chris kept the lead and pulled a small gap to finish 1st, with Gary heading home Dave G. Further back, the field was spread.

Race 2 saw Dave M take a comfortable win. John Y a fairly lonely 2nd and Drew and Fern fighting to the line with only 0.31s between them.

Race 3 was a right old nail biter right until the end. Tom made an early break from the field. Alan W and Russ were having a ding dong battle, with Alan just about holding sway but Russ looked faster. Eventually Russ did make it past Alan and hen it was just a matter of seeing whether there was enough time for him to catch Tom out front before the flag. He did catch Tom with one lap to go and with a back-marker getting involved he saw a gap and unfortunately came out worst of the 3-wide corner. Alan managed to get back past Russ as he recovered to the track and Tom was off and clear. It was the one that got away for Russ as he was certainly quick enough overall to deserve a win.

Race 4 The reverse grid was always going to be interesting and it proved to be so with an incident up front scattering the field all over the place. Those that made it through were away and made up good places. Race 1 winner, Chris, found himself way off track and lost a lot of time. Working hard to get back to the thick of the field - then throwing it all away again with a silly spin all of his own. Out front, Rob R and Gary had made it through the incidents and worked their way through the field finishing first and second respectively. Again the field was relatively spread and 3rd place was eventually taken by Chris after working his way back through the field but 30 seconds off the winners time. Mike M and Ian W crossed the line just 0.26 seconds apart.

Race 5 An easy win for Dave coming through from the back of the grid and storming off into the distance. It was noticed that he was easing back off the throttle on the straights perhaps to have less of a lonely time out on track? Fern made his way through a great battle to a fairly comfortable 2nd with John Y and Peter S having a race long tussle with John just sneaking the last podium position by 0.20s. Steve, Drew, Ashley and Paul were also hammer and tongs through the race after early incidents saw them clump together on track.

Race 6 Another win for Tom. Kevin made an early lead as others were fighting from the back but as soon as Tom had made his way through the field, he quickly hunted Kevin down and disappeared up the road. Russ got caught up in a huge shunt early doors when others had spins ahead. This involved several karts and saw 3 karts damaged and off pace. Alan W made it through to 2nd and Andy R came home in 3rd but it was all spread out up front. Laura finished 4th and Kevin managed to hold onto 5th. Russ and his damaged kart just kept ahead of Simon Co after a great race long battle.

The afternoon saw a 2 hour enduro for teams of 3. As I was working on the results from the earlier 6 races I'm afraid I missed nearly all the action. However, the winners were Craig and Dave M, 2nd were Gary M, Dave P and Andy R and 3rd were Mike M, Steve K and Tom B.

A great buzzing atmosphere all day long. Thanks to Allan for his hard work as ever. I really hope that those attending their first karting event with CSMA had a great day out and will join us at future events. With a high number of entrants already for Rye House, I'm certainly looking forward to more of the same on the 12th October.
