A big thank-you to Robert, Kevin and Brian for the pictures.
A damp and gray day met the 32 karters on arrival at the Whilton Mill track, near Daventry. With a complete mix of the experienced through to the absolute beginner, the day was set to be great fun and action packed.
Things got under way with the customary practice sessions. The track was like ice to begin with and lots of karts were seen pointing the wrong way, and generally investigating the scenery off track. However, the sun was beginning to peak through and with 16 karts on the track during each session, dry lines began to appear.
By the time we had reached the 'A' and 'B' finals, the track was running at dry speeds.
The 'B' Final was a busy affair with jostling, spins, overtaking and even one kart getting to the top of the run-off banking at the exit of the final corner. Well done to Nick for identifying this new and un-tapped racing line! I don't think the circuit staff quit appreciated the off-roading experience Nick has with bikes as they called him into the pits for some "personal tuition"!
Robert took top honours followed by Rocco and Steve G in second and 3rd separated by only 2 seconds.
The 'A' Final saw action from the start, the reversed grid making people keen to take early places. There were a few spins and close calls before things settled down into a more stable order. There were fights going on throughout the field but the overall battle was won by Dave Morris, followed by Terry (who started from the back of the grid) and Alan W took the final podium position.
The final event of the day was the 2-man 1.5 hour endurance race. This went right down to the wire with the win being taken on the final lap by Bob Atkinson / Iain Butler-Gallie and a final gap of only 1.5 seconds. In second was Tony Hambleton / James Leadbeater followed by Gary Duke / Eric Tiv on the final step of the podium.
As ever, the atmosphere over the day was great. A huge thank-you goes to Allan Goddard who once again organised a faultless days entertainment for everyone and also to the Whilton Mill staff for keeping the karts going - just!
We'll be doing it all again at the Rye House Circuit, Hoddesdon, on Monday April 23rd and with the days becoming more and more popular, we recommend you get your entry in as early as possible.
See you at Rye House.
